[SOC] In True SOC Style

Darren,

I am taking a chance in providing a simple explanation of the grey line. This may get me kicked out of SOC.

Basically, the prescence of the D-layer (goes away at night) screws up our access to the more useful F-layer. For two locations, at opposite "ends" of the grey line, the station on the sunset side sees the D-layer drop like a rock, whilst (shameful patronization) the station on the sunrise side sees the D-layer slowly rise. Thus, there is a "window" along the grey-line that is relatively free of the D-layer.

To atone and revert back to the minimal standards and moral principles worthy of SOC, I will attempt to do something stupid like calling CQ into a dummy load. I have already messed up a Sudoku problem today, so I am on my way.

CW anyone? I'm not fast, but I'm sloppy.

I've heard hams talking about the grey line before.
I thought it was the mark you get on your neck when you haven't washed
properly.
You mean it has something to do with radio????

The other thought was it was a queue of pensioners waiting in the post
office for their pensions?

I've only been licenced 16 years, so still a newbie. I'll dig out a book
or two and get someone to read me the bits about the grey line.
I'd read it myself but there are tooo many long words in ham radio
books. Propagation.... That's a long word, and spelt wrong no doubt... I
thought it was something to do with farming.... Will I ever get he hang
of this hobby?
