Immediate response was who cares?  Haven't eaten one since  1945, an
important garden product of the times and avoided like the plague
thereafter.  Looked it up and found it enjoyed similar popularity in Germany
during WW1.  My guess is that answer to your question is regional.
Certainly not part of daily conversation for most of country.
