[SOC] Component substitution info

Quite some time ago I had a book which provided a listing of components
which could reasonably be used as substitutes for other components. I think
it was put out by Radio Shack, for their own line of components.

In other words, if you were building something which called for example to
use a 2N2222 and you didn't have one on hand, this book would tell you which
transistors were similar and you could probably get away with using.

Does anyone know if any such book, or perhaps a web site, exists nowadays
and if so I'd appreciate your pointing me to it.

Thanks for any help you might be able to send this way.
