Thanks for all the resonses. I now understand.

We literally follow the US practice. Fake paper poppy on wire sold by the RSL
[Returned Services League] Womens Auxilliary to raise money for veterans charities.

Remberance Day is no big deal here although many businesses, TV radio etc. do
continue to observe two minutes silence at 11:00 a.m. followed by the "ode of
remembrance" [short version]. All local branches of the RSL hold short ceremonies.

Interestingly this year the RSL approached a big chain store [Woolworths] to
retail them Australia wide. I believe they did it for a number of years in one
or more states at a local level. They not only declined the offer but withdrew
their support entirely.

Bad move, PR disaster. I for one will not shop there when I have alternatives.
Alienating the Veteran and Ex-Service community is as stupid as you can get.
Nearly every one in this country has or did have some family member, even
distant, in the services.

Always a ticking time bomb for unwary politicians as well. The previous Veterans
Affairs Minister wanted to strip $500 million from veterans benefits. It was
leaked to an outraged media and guess what?

The political "kiss of death"
