Gentlemen (and ladies too of course if there are any on the lists),
Many thanks for all your suggestions.
It seems that the concensus is to just get out there and do it (whilst
practising with appropriate software).
Special thanks to Bill, K4KSR who is the only person I've actually had a CW
QSO with - slow, awful Morse from my end but transatlantic using 10W into a
G5RV with the K2 at the first attempt (well, actually, it was the second
attempt due to my incompetence dealing with timezones) in difficult
conditions. I still owe a QSL card after more than a year. Also thanks to
Ian VK2TIP whose electronics pages finally stirred me into action.
And then there's Claude whom I haven't heard from for some time. He attached
the moniker of MrP to me when he was running SOC and I tried to get the
callsign M3MRP but sadly it was already taken. It was a promise to Claude
that made me persist and get my licence.
I'll be replying individually to each of your kind tips but it'll take a
while to get through them all so please don't take offence at any delay; I
really appreciate the tips.
And to Ray: I'll certainly take a look at the morse trainer.
My very best wishes to you all.
Paul M3CRQ
p.s. We shot ourselves in the foot again with the cricket. Bugger.
