You're right to a large extent IMHO. However the difference now is that with
advancing technology we are manipulating the environment. In the past, such
activities did sod all to affect the world. There weren't enough people and
neither the tools to do anything particularly bad on anything other than a
purely local scale.

Now I'm no tree hugger but I find it increasingly worrying that potential
long term dangers seem to be being ignored for the sake of a short-term
dollar/pound/euro/rouble/whatever.

Big business, it seems to me, has much to answer for. It's depressing.
