Well, I can see why 'they' should want to keep things quiet in the USA, but
the phenomenon described in the report is no secret to us over this side of
the pond. It's common knowledge, and it's already started to happen.
How it works is this:
The gulf stream runs across the Atlantic from the gulf of Mexico and ends in
the area between Scandinavia and Iceland. Here the nice warm water cools,
sinks, and begins its return journey along the bottom of the Atlantic, where
the cycle repeats.
When the water reaches this side of the pond, it comes up against a current
which originates off Northern Russia, passing round the North Cape.
Owing to global warming, the mighty rivers of Northern Russia are feeding a
hell of a lot more fresh meltwater into this current than usual. This is
fun if you are in the business of digging-up wooly mammoths in Siberia, but
all that water is decreasing the salinity of the sea between Scandinavia and
Iceland, so it does not 'sink' when it cools. Therefore the gulf stream is
being strangled, like a massive valve being slowly closed.
This effect has been run on computer models. The effect is slow and subtle
at first (now), but it is a chain-reaction, and if current trends continue,
the Gulf stream could stop almost completely in less than forty years.
Although obviously the effect will strike Northern Europe first, the
knock-on effect on the Northern hemisphere as a whole could be devastating.
The answer? who knows?.
Some reckon that it is already futile, and we should just let nature take
its course.
It seems that global warming may cure itself, by burying the industrial
Northern USA, Northern and Eastern Europe under an ice sheet.
Still, never mind, eh?
