There is a bit more to this, per studies by a Canadian colleague some years
ago. Visual perception starts at the outer edges and works inward. Try
disambiguating "house" and "horse" starting with end letters and working
inward one at a time. Similarity detection is much faster than difference
detection, a very different process and applies to CW as well. There are a
number of very practical consequences. The mix of upper and lower case
letters is much easier to read THAN ALL UPPER CASE because there is more
information in the edges of each letter. You drive in traffic by avoiding
edges of other vehicles and are shocked to find a vehicle cruising in a
blind spot that occludes both edge and relative motion information.
