This was religeous hysteria where the majority felt they were doing GOD's

Again the the purpose was to save the souls of those who did not live
in a state of grace per the religion of the day.

This was in many cases payback for the slaughter of Eastern Europeans by 
the Muslims, Mongol and Turkish hordes.

A deranged individual who could have been stopped with a little backbone

This was the system that would be the salvation of the world. The working
mans Eden where all would contribute according to their ability and
receive
according to their need. There are still fragments around because
socialism
was not proven wrong but betrayed wherever it was established. That is to
say that in England, Germany, France, China and elsewhere they have to
allow 
a certain level of capitalism in order to keep the engine running so the
social
programs can stay in force.
