[SOC] West of the Pond

The batsman is under no circumstances permitted to touch the ball whilst
it's in play (except with the bat!).

If he does so then any member of the fielding side may appeal to the umpire
and have the batsman given out.

There's a certain amount of ambiguity here because often the batsman will,
as a courtesy to the fielders, push the ball back with either bat or hand to
them.

Technically the fielders could appeal and the batsman be given out. This
never happens in practice unless the batsman is deemed to be trying to
affect the course of the game.

The game is generally played by gentlemen.

Paul :-)
