The ball must be delivered from a straight arm. Under arm is legal but
frowned upon.
'Curves' are generated by polishing one side of the ball and allowing the
other side to become roughened.
Then there's spin where the bowler spins the ball from fingers or wrist so
that it changes direction as it bounces (c.f. the 'googly')
Or even better, swings before it bounces and then abrubtly changes direction
hoping for an edge to the slips or straight on to the stumps.
The game is incredibly subtle to those who can appreciate it but I have to
confess that a sport which can last for five days and not produce a result
will bewilder many.
It's a wondeful way of spending a summer afternoon (with beer) though.
