Chris,
Now you've got me confused....
I are a niave trusting sort who happens to work in computer trade. Here's da
explanation and if it's so bleedin' obvious and you've bin takin' da piss
then I have to go and talk to Luigi and da boys.
With a windowing GUI (graphical user interface), just one window has focus
(the one you're working/typing in). "Stealing focus" is where another window
pops up without warning and takes your keystrokes. Typically, if you're not
quite a touch typist and have been paying more attention to the keyboard
than the screen then it's a couple of seconds before you notice that your
input is to the new 'stolen' focus rather than the one you thought you were
working in.
It's a valid technique, but only really should be used for critical system
errors where you *must* make a decision as to what to do next.
Unfortunately, some software authors consider that *their* application is so
import that if it can't find say "xyzzy.cave" in order to continue then they
demand your immediate attention to resolve the matter.
It pisses me off.
Paul ;-)
