Back a few decades ago in Minnesota, one could not buy colored
margarine (oleomargarine, or just 'oleo') in any form except
one-pound blocks. A dairy state, with lots of butter to sell,
Minnesota allowed those white one-pound blocks to be sold with a dye
packet, so if you wanted something yellow to spread on your bread,
you had to mix the dye into that block of oleo. It usually came out
streaky, with dark orange splotches throughout the white mess. The
corn stateof Iowa had all the colored margarine you could want, in
1/4-pound sticks even! It cost about 10 cents a pound in the late
50's, when butter was about 60 cents a pound. I remember my mom
bringing some of this yellow oleo back to Minnesota after visiting
relatives in Iowa. She was always worried the butter police would
stop her at the border and confiscate her oleo.
