You are quite correct.  Hoewever, through extensive consultation with two
semanticists, one linguist, a semiotician, a herpetologist (not a relevant
discipline, but she's *really* good looking), and for the view of the
"Man-on-the-street" a tramp wandering about who requested my spare change,
the following is offered:

While the intense SOC competition for last place is undeniable, that
competition is not at all based on active striving for such a meritorious
position.  It must be achieved through means totally SOC in nature:
screw-ups, incompetence, stumbling, faltering, yielding to external
pressures (a cool one, for example), and general lethargy are but a few of
the true SOC methods for attaining the "anchor" position.  Hence, the
proper term for reaching last place through SOC means is not that the SOC
participant was "overtaking" the last place racer, but rather "undertaking"
that person.
