My loudest airplane experience was watching the Red Arrows perform at a
Fourth of July (aka Independence Day) fete at the small base I was at in the
Yorkshire Dales. The dales enhanced the sound, and on some runs they would
approach the station from down in the dale, noiselessly, then all of them
would suddenly be at 100 feet roaring over the crowd. I have been on the
flight deck of aircraft carriers with full-blown launch ops in progress,
including the now-retired supersonic A-5 Vigilante, and the six Red Arrows
far surpassed that noise level!
The Red Arrows' air show is far more impressive than the Blue Angels IMO.
Much more low-level flying and close maneuvering. They do a low-level red,
white, and blue smoke braid that knocks your socks off!
