I worked at Lockheed during the summer of 1959 and was able to see a
Starfighter up close. The wings only extended about 5 feet either side
of the fuselage (and had protective covers on the leading edges since
they were quite sharp). It sure didn't look like it would have much
maneuverability. One Lockheed advertisement referred to it as a
"missile with a man in it". Supposedly with the afterburner on they
could climb practically as fast as they could go in level flight.
Once I was at the Van Nuys airport in California and saw an F-5 take off
and pull a 90 degree turn before he reached the end of the runway.
Any hams going to the Dayton Hamvention should also check out the USAF
museum, which has a huge collection of aircraft.
