I've always expected the folks in the northern portion of the state to want
to split the state in two! Definitely the nicer part of the state, IMHO!

Subject: [SOC] California

Since this subject has come up I'd like to, as a former long time
resident of this state, throw in a few words. When California is
mentioned most people equate it to the large urban areas, but this state
is 1000 miles from south to north and a couple hundred from west to
east. Most people in the world can find a piece of California that is
just like where they live. From alpine skiing in the Sierras to the
wilderness country of the Siskiyous to the northeast portion which is
practically unpopulated. The idea that California is a sprawling urban
mass is unfortunate but that seems to be the way the rest of the world
sees it. So why did I leave---frankly, on my retirement pittance, I
can't afford it.
