Oh, rats. There I go again, exhibiting lack of fairness in matters of
congenital programming. Surely, the sinistrally-challenged should have
eben included with my statement (I truly did consider that, but thought it
better not to go too far -- like maybe mentioning the galactosically
challenged, f'rinstance -- after all, very few have three hands, and most
others never have heard of them).
Should my record of insensitivity to minorities keep moving in that
direction, I may forfeit my opportunity to command the State of California
if Gray Davis is booted from office -- a prospect which seems to loom
larger all the time. For those who care about such things, Our Governor
has earned the lowest popularity and confidence ratings from the electorate
in the entire history of poll-taking in California. Well over 50% of those
of voting age in the state think he's a yutz, or something like that.
A political anomaly may be brewing. The 900,000 signatures needed for
initiating a referendum to remove the Governor are being gathered now.
Supporters of the referendum claim their total is rapidly approaching the
required number. If Davis is ousted by popular vote, his successor will
(at the same election) gain the office through *plurality* vote. So if a
large number of candidates seek the office, it's quite possible that a very
few voters will elect the next Governor. This means that Davis's successor
might be detested by even more Californians than those who now detest
Davis. Anyone interested in such matters might recall that through a
plurality election, Salvador Allende became President of Chile, an
occurrence which set into motion a lengthy and tragic chain of events.
I hope California does not wind up with a military dictatorship. If it
does, I'm out of here.
