Just a brief note, nothing too out of the
ordinary...

I went to a wedding over the weekend near
Pittsburgh, PA, and brought my K1. I finally got a
chance to slip away for a bit yesterday afternoon to
play with it, bringing along my cousin Jake, who's 11.
He helped me string my 50' wire about 10' high across
a couple of branches, and load the batteries into the
holder.

Jake had learned the code at one time, in the
Scouts, I think. He was delighted with the whole
thing. I wrote out a bit of what was going on for him,
so he could follow the CW. With no power out, he
played with sending his name, and "CQ," with the
paddles. Did very well, too!

  On 40M/3W, I worked W1AW/3. I'd never worked W1AW
before, didn't know they even operated /P! Fun. Then,
on 20, I worked IU2HQ! During the QSO, Jake said, "Is
he talking to you?" Then he heard him repeating my
call - question answered.

I offered to elmer him, if was interested in
getting a license. He had a bunch of questions about
licensing, and cost of rigs.

Even though the relatives were saying, "ham radio?
Talking to people? Hasn't he heard of the internet?"
It was a big high point of the weekend for me and Jake.
