It's known, in the UK, as a 'double entendre' (double is pronounced like
"doobler" from French). Meaning a word that can have two meanings.
It's something that was often used in Music Hall comedy, by people like Max
Miller, and a tradition carried on by comics like Ken Dodd. A web search on
either name should give you their background. :-)
The funnier double entendres are often ones where one meaning is quite
innocent, like having a bird called a Tit, and another meaning that has
sexual connotations, because only if you know the sexual connotation can the
joke be said to be 'smutty' or rude. An innocent person would only know the
innocent version. HI.
Hope this helps?
