As long as it is not "left-driving", it can not be a 100% "UK thing" !
BTW, but as I have not yet done my homework I am not sure abt that, but last 
week, while watching a TV program abt French way of living in the 1800's; I 
heard the following : "In the late 1790's, Napoleon, among other things, have 
set new traffic rules, one of them being the right-driving rule. And it is said 
that England has thus choosen the left-driving rule just not to do as Napoleon".

Ah ces Britanniques ...

And yes, you may be sri of that, but if you drive on the right side of the 
street, it is "bcoz of" Napoleon I.
