Well, it does seem to have work despite its obvious warts. But I kinda
agree with you. The drawback of either system is when party ideology gets
in the way of common sense. No one of our nations seems to have an absence
of absolute idiots to the far right or left. As I say, they add seasoning
to the political soup, but should never be trusted alone in the kitchen.
John Gorton sounds like a winner!!.
And now my 2 cents.
When the XYL and I visited Ottawa, we did the obligatory tour of Parliament.
By luck, we were in the last tour of the day and were asked if we would like
to attend Question Period. You betchum!! For US types who haven't
witnessed QP, see if you can catch it when CSPAN covers the Brits. (Or look
up the Hansard on web for unedited text of proceedings.) Anyway, there was
a bit of a dustup over a couple of issues we didn't fully understand --
enough to make the evening news. That night our friends explained some of
the details, but the were green with envy not to have been there. We went
away wishing for a mechanism to make sure our leaders had their act
together.
Several years ago, I volunteered to sub as Sunday School teacher for the
high school group when the regular couple leading the class were away.
Purely by chance, I had the class the Sunday morning after the
Clinton-Lewinsky mess blew up (no pun). Most of these kids were 12th
graders taking the required government course, so I asked them what they
thought the fallout would be. Not a clue as to the possibilities. So I
asked what they thought could/would happen in a parliamentary system.
Again, not a clue. Best I could tell, their government class was a ticket
they had to punch, but not viewed as important to them as emerging results.
And these were bright kids at the top of their respective classs.
Better stop before my blood boils again.
