[SOC] The Death Penalty

Gentlemen.
I am no 'pinko', and I am quite happy to concede that there are people on
death row who have earned their punishment many times over. Every now and
then a particularly heart-rending crime occurs which makes any
right-thinking man feel that he would gladly pull the lever himself to send
the murderer for a long drop on a short rope.

The death penalty is a perfect and fitting punishment for murder, but
unfortunately, the law being run by humans, it is capable of making errors
or being mis-led, and has done.

The only thing that divides us is the degree of risk we are personally
prepared to accept that someday an innocent man may be executed for a crime
he did not commit.

As I am not prepared for it to happen frequently, I am obliged to swallow
the bitter pill of having (for example) child sex murderers left to live,
when (as we all accept) they really should be publicly burnt at the stake.

Also I can use my imagination to put myself in the position of one wrongly
sentenced for such a crime.

My personal position is that you should remain in prison for as long as your
victim remains dead.
