He speaks the truth..not EVERYONE can get a firearm. If you were ever
convicted of a "domestic violence" charge (Felony or Misdemeanor) - no gun..
Committed to a "looney bin", dishonorable discharge from the military,
convicted of any felony and being a non-resident alien also prohibit you
from getting a firearm.

They say that there are around 250 million legal firearms in public hands in
the U.S., probably around 95% of those are common run of the mill types,
i.e. hunting rifles and sporting shotguns.

For our cousins across both ponds, you may find it interesting to note that
prior to 1968, there were no controls on the sale of firearms. You could
even purchase handguns via mail order. Send a money order to a company, and
in about a couple of weeks, you would be able to go to the local REA office
and pick it up. No age checks, background checks, nada. I can remember my
Dad ordering a US Army surplus .45 pistol that he paid $11 for - the
Government was selling them to NRA members!

And I know some of my friends on "another list" are quite vocal about the
2nd Amendment, almost to a point of hysteria, but the normal firearm owner
is a bit more "reserved". Personally, I do own some firearms and do believe
it is a right guaranteed to me. But I also understand the limitations that
have been placed on ownership of firearms. The 2nd Amendment is no more
important to me than the rest of them (well except for the 16th Amendment -
Income Tax - and that one sucks <grin>)
