Nigel,
Think of them as "mini-contests" where the multipliers are the counties
in that particular state. They usually last around 12 hours. A lot of the
participation from outside the state are ops going after the US-CA (Worked
all US Counties) award. I participated in the Michigan QSO party last
weekend and since I am in a fairly rare county, I generated several pileups
and have already got several QSL requests from stations I worked. Anyone
can play in them - DX included.
