California Sales Tax is now 8.5%, levied at the point of sale on almost
anything sold within the state. But the State, in its benevolent wisdom,
elects allowance to let people live (so they can continue to work and pay
more of the *other* taxes). Hence there is no Sales Tax on food,
prescription pharmaceuticals, and such stuff.
