I guess that somewhat depends on the nature and cause of the crash. 
What were the symptoms?  Were there any error messages?

When you reboot the system should detect that the hard drive wasn't
shut down properly and run fsck which checks the drive.  Sometimes it
will find errors and tell you that you need to run fsck again with
certain parameters.

If you run ext3 or reiserfs, you will avoid most of these problems. 
You need to be running a 2.4.x kernel for ext3 and I thing reiserfs
requires a kernel patch.

I recall once having to reinstall, but that was due to Red Hat botching
an upgrade to a new version.  That was when I switched to Debian.  The
only other time I have had to reinstall in the 8 years I have been
using Linux was when the hard drive itself failed.
