There are none left with direct memories of WW1, but enough of us who
remember the survivors of that one. I have seen the US Vietnam memorial
with 50K+ names, but have also driven down a single minor road in Flanders
and counted Brit War Graves Commission crosses doubling or tripling that
number, all laid out in 100 x 100 arrays. A million killed (on one side
alone) in an area about the size of a midwestern US county. The US Civil War
is the only thing that comes close to the losses suffered by our allies
brethren each World War.
Enjoy the holiday, but at least hum or whistle "Taps" or "Last Post" for a
prior generation. Pretty sure "Last Post" is same as US "Tatoo" for those
who still remember the calls.
