Hippopotamus of company for a Californian friend of animals
[2002-05-26 09:06 ] SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - a Pygmy hippopotamus of 225 kilos was
during at least ten years the pet to an inhabitant of the area of San Diego, in
California. The female hippopotamus, old from 12 to 15 years, lived surrounded
by a hundred of other animals - in particular by peacocks, geese, goats and
ducks - in the garden of Arthur Stehly, according to San Diego Union-
Tribune. "I did not believe it when I saw it," declared Zeke Awbrey, person in
charge for the wild animals for California. "Nobody expects to find a giant
hippopotamus in the garden of a resident." The newspaper specified that the
authorities had launched an investigation for Zeke Stehly would not have been
in possession of a licence authorizing him to hold a hippopotamus. The animal
was seized at the end of January thanks to the indications of an estate agent
who had discovered it while making visit a nearby house.
