[SOC] "Extra" Class?

OK, what is the advantage of a mercury wetted relay?? I have heard of them,
but never really quite understood the function. Does it have something to
do with the speed of operation or does it have to do with allowing a
physically smaller relay handle more voltage/current? Or is it something
else??
