Last May during the Armed Forces Day special event you
could work various military stations split. They were
transmitting on frequencies well outside our bands and
listening at an announced frequency inside our bands.

I was amazed at the number of hams who just didn't get
it. One guy called time after time on the frequency
WAR was operating on (around 6.9 MHz). Finally someone
explained to the WAR operator what was going on and
the WAR operator explained what operating split meant.

This guy gave his call a couple of times and was
probably curious why WAR wasn't responding to him.
Seemed clueless he was a good quarter of a MHz for the
nearest ham phone segment...

I'm always amazed at the posting along the lines of,
"I just bought a new GeeWhiz-1000 HF rig and need to
know what diode to clip to open up the transmit..."

I'll admit the thought of a diode stopping me for
something (whether it's something I want to do or not)
causes me to rebel. But at the same time, it'll keep
me from calling endlessly on 6.9 MHz like the other,
er, gentleman...

I don't suppose we can fix it, so you either let it
frustrate you or you laugh...
