Rob, it sounds like you don't have enough conventional memory.

"WHAT, YOU SAY!!!!  I'VE GOT 32 MEGS!!! (or whatever you have)  How could I
be out of memory?"

DOS apps can only access the lower 640 KB of that memory, and if you have
several DOS apps going at the same time, well, start with 640 and start
subtracting.....

So what's taking your memory?  Lots of little things you wouldn't expect.
Try this.  At the command prompt, type "MEM" <return>.  That will list the
breakdown of memory usage.

This one I've got to do from memory <no pun here>, but I think it's "MEM
MODE | MORE".  Try typing that one in.  Without the "" of course and case
doesn't matter.  It should list memory usage by device.  It will tell you
what's eating up low memory.  Loading devices high (into high memory) will
help.  I won't try to get into all the nasty little details here.  For one
thing, I've forgotten much of them and if you have or can get a book
covering DOS, it should explain more.
