I'll back that in...
Another one is never say "things couldn't be worse", thirty years ago next
Easter Friday (that's how memorable) a very dear close friend delivered a 3/
4 hour "talk / speech" on that very expression.
He went into great detail about one particular 24 hour period he personally
spent in New Guinea fighting the Japanese around late 1942.
Hilarious, not his intention, but he is / was a great speaker.
NEVER, EVER, SINCE have I used or thought of the expression "things couldn't
be worse" or anything remotely near it. Not one week goes by that I don't
recall Fred and this 24 hour period facing the Japanese hand to hand in
WWII.
May God rest his soul, he was a brilliant bar room philosopher, no human
being could not be moved an permanently affected by his personal "story".
Yes, among all the grimness, Fred could convey the humour in it all.
Started the day in a water filled trench etc. etc., became Corporal due to
losses, busted down, re-instated, blown up 20 times throughout proceedings
of the l-o-n-g day, eventually late at night paraded before Company
Commander (busted again) while in delirium but backed by MO and the
Salvation Army officer.
The Salvation Army (Sallies) are / were held in high esteem in OZ because
during WWII (and Korea and Vietnam) no matter how sticky it got, when you
turned around in the field there was a "Sally" behind you with a hot drink
and some food... That's TRUE...
FWIW - NEVER say "things couldn't be worse".
But I think Claude said...

I hope some young people learn something from this and I apologize I can't
repeat Fred's performance of 30 years ago...
