Bonjour les amis !
What about your coming w/e (yet almost half gone for Ian .. :o(( ) ?
This morning (LT) I have received (to my great surprise) an email from XE1BEF.
Some DX Bulletin Spamming !
I do know XE1BEF for some other (unpleasant) reasons (JW0PK related) but
"inutile de remuer la merde". The file is closed now.
Today I want to discuss a bit about "translators", the online ones or even the
"off line" ones, but in all cases the "computer version" ones !
I guess we all know Systran. I am using their online facilities when translating
the Press Releases I am posting here. In every case I have to rewrite at least
40% of the text bcoz of funny translations. It seems that their dictionnary has
some problems with specific words like "police" which always appears to be a
"font" (arial or New courier ??) but never "cops". Ian, I know you are using
Systran on your web page. Just wondering if you have gained some special access
to their hidden (more accurate) dictionnary ?
Some days ago, we had some email exchange with Chris (G4PDJ) and it seems that
my duel partner is using a very good translator (BTW, Chris, cela doit tre un
Secret d'Etat car j'attends toujours le nom du traducteur que vous employez ;o))
: he sent me a rather long text in English with the F translation and apart 2-3
minor (but anyway hilarous) mistakes, everything was fine. I was really
surprized for I know that French language is not the easiest one for
translators.
Well ... after this (too ?) looonng intro, now here is the funny side of the
story, and let's come back to XE1BEF.
This guy is sending a DX bulletin. Reading this bulletin, besides the intrinsic
info, is funny, from time to time.
Hector clearly uses a translator from Spanish towards English. I do not speak
Spanish except to say "Carasho la punieta", which means absolutely nothing but
was the motto of the father of some friends I had when I was a child (they are
an EA family) so I can not make some "translation back" but who cares ?? When it
is time to laugh at someone, let's do it in a SOC way !
[Background : Hector claims to be a journalist and is very proud of that claim]
Here are some of the "good ones" ( not only due to translating mistake but also
good abt the meaning !) :
Let's start with an easy one : "home call" is always translated as "indicative
of house"
Now, [speaking of some bug report in MixW soft, v2.05] : " (...) it shows the
route toward the QSO that you carry (..)"
Well, I was aware of the QSL route but what a wonderful soft to show me the
route toward the QSO I carry (or maybe I am carrying at the moment ?..!). Well,
as far as I know, the QSO route is always the same : "hand on the key,
headphones on the ears". But I may be wrong ...
[BTW, if you are using MixW, check http://mixw.net/files/MixW206.exe for the
latest version, bugs fixed]
Now that we know our route to our next QSO, let's see what do we really need to
achieve it :
<<
would You like to listen the communications that the
astronauts of all the missions carry out Shuttle with the Space Center of
the NASA but don't you have the necessary team?
>>
Do not worry, WA3NAN can help you !
<<
you can make it with a team of HF, taking advantage that WA3NAN - the station of
the Amateur
Goddard Radiates Club, located in Greenbelt, Maryland
>>
I guess the Spanish word is near to the French one, hence some confusion btwn
"quipe" (team) and "quipement" (equipment/gear).
[FYI, WA3NAN makes transmissions of all the missions Shuttle on 3860, 7185 Hz
LSB and 14295, 21395, 28650 Hz USB]
So, we have the route and the team. You want to give FAX a try ??
<<
FREQUENCIES FOR FAX. - For those that already have programs of FAX in HF or
for those that don't have them, look for them in:
http://members.fortunecity.com/xe1bef/digital.htm
>>
So, it is clear : should you have them or not, you have to get them at the given
URL :o))
Back to Space :
<<
AVISTAMIENTO OF SPACE SHIPS. - The NASA informs us that this it is a good
week to observe two space ships flying on its house: the International Space
Station and the Space Ferry Endeavour.
>>
Let's forget "Avistamiento" (Avistamiento yourself !) but let's look at the
Space Ferry flying on/in NASA's house (!!!) ...
a) Is NASA building so large that a Shuttle can fly on/in it ?? Waooww ....
b) Chris and Mr P will confirm (I hope !) my next assert :
- the Ferry is used btwn Dover & Calais _at_ sea-level.
- the Shuttle is used btwn London & Paris _below_ sea-level, in a dark place
which can be compared to space ;o))
But let's go on in our Space Discovery :
<<
Telescope is not required to see them. All that you need is their eyes.
>>
Well ... what about mine ?? Should I close them ?
Yesterday we were speaking of some specific time of the day (0900 ot 2100 or
even 1700).
Now, I would like to know what is so special in this one :
<<[abt the new (?) Ham band : 60 m]
In comparison with the bands of 80 and 40 meters, the station
WA2XSY also demonstrated' that the band of 60 meters is the most reliable in
three o'clock.
>>
What are you doing at three ?? (0300 or 1500 ?). What happened at "three" so
that it worths the notice ?!! ;o))
Or it is the "military" version of "three o'clock" ? U know : "Bandits at 3" ...
Well ... Bandits at 3 .... Heyyyy ... that is (almost) France !!!! Ok ... Any
sked needed on 60m ?!
Well, do what you want at three, on my side I will now enter some contests :
<<
DX All-seized Contest-CW - Organized for the Amateur Japan I Radiate League,
>>
Oups .... really ??? Is Asia seized ??
And fool of you, you were thinking that you enter a contest for our own
pleasure, n'est-il-pas ?
No,no,no ... you are entering a contest _for_ the "I Radiate League" organizing
the Contest ;o))
And for our US friends :
<<
West Virginia QSO Party--CW/SSB--Organized for the West Virginia State
Amateur Radiates Council
>>
Some of you are living in Virginia (Bill ... are you there ?!). Just be careful,
a Council is radiating nearby ...
A real contester will look at the propag charts but I hope you are not a VHF+
addict :
<<
The openings in 144MHZ they could also be given but I don't eat in the low
bands.
>>
And now, last but not least ... The "Ham Market", also called "2nd hand market"
:
<<
I inform them that there is the following thing for the sale or it stops swap
>>
Well ... let's see what we can take here ... I will not list all the items. You
should just know that all "to sell" ads start with : << I BLINDFOLD >>
Hey guy ... I am not so fool !! I want to see before giving the money !
Humm, if you want to have more fun :
<<
The "DX Bulletin of XE1BEF" that is also available in languages: Spanish,
English, Italian, German, French and Portuguese in:
http://www.geocities.com/xe1bef
http://members.fortunecity.com/xe1bef
>>
===
And as I do not want to be only a bad boy, "tirant vue", I will ask now a
serious question :
"free time" (in "they will operate during their free time") is translated as
"free whiles". I am OK with it but just want to know if it is "Englishly
correct" (I mean abt the use).
A suivre ...
73!
Claude
PS: if there is any friend of Hector on this ML ... sorry guy !
