The hot news from around here is the discovery of northern snakehead fish in
a Maryland pond near Washington. The snakehead, native to China and Korea,
is one of those "walking" fish that can use its fins and flippers to drag
itself from one body of water to another. They can survive out of water for
two or three days. They grow up to four feet long and, being carnivores, can
clean the pan fish out of a lake in short order. Nobody wants to see a fish
like this spread to the lakes and rivers of North America. Maryland
officials are considering either draining or dynamiting the pond, an
abandoned gravel pit in Crofton MD. Hordes of fishermen, reporters and other
media types, and the merely curious have descended on the site, and one
local radio station is advertising a Weird Fish Festival. Eventually, I'm
sure, the animal rights activists will show up to make sure that no one
inflicts emotional distress and mental anguish on the snakeheads.
