[SOC] getting it

Paul,

All seriousness aside, I am a lover of CW, and
encourage you in your task. For some reason, it's more
fun than seems appropriate.

If you're not learning the letters at a good clip
per letter, such as 13-15 wpm, you may find that, like
most, you would need to relearn the code after getting
up to about 10 wpm. Some say, and I agree, that the
way most of us learned was to have a sort of "look-up
table" in our heads, where we looked up each letter (
dididit = three dots = s), which only works to about
10 wpm. Then, we have to make the transition to
hearing the code for each letter as if someone is
saying the letter to us (dididit = s).

G4FON has the Koch trainer, free quick download, on
his site, and with it, you begin with 15 wpm letters,
just a couple at a time, adding another when you learn
them. It has other features, too, but with the basic
alphabet, when you get to where you know all the
characters (40 available,) you know them at a
per-letter speed of 15, so you recognize them more by
the sound of the entire letter, rather than its
constituent dits and dahs. Of course, you can do this
at 3 wpm, at first, and gradually increase.

It's great to get to 20-25 wpm, because there's a
world of fun out there...if you like that sort of
thing.
