Kissinger resigns of the presidency of a board of inquiry over September 11 [ 14/12/2002 06:31 ]
WASHINGTON (AP) -- the former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger
resigned Friday of the presidency of a board of inquiry over September
11th, calling upon possible conflicts of interest with his occupation.
"the controversy could quickly reach the consulting company I
created", he writes in a letter addressed to the American president
George W Bush. "I thus concluded that I cannot accept the
responsibility that you proposed to me". This resignation of Kissinger
intervenes whereas he had tried in vain Thursday to convince the
families of the victims of September 11th that his occupation as head
of Kissinger Associates would not interfere with his duties of
president. Wednesday also, the vice-president of this commission,
George Mitchell, had resigned, partially because of his membership in
a law firm and possible conflict of interest. President Bush accepted
the resignation of Mr. Kissinger and expressed his regrets in an
official statement. "His presidency would have provided us the points
of view and the analyses necessary to understand the methods of our
enemies and the nature of the threats which await us", he wrote.
