Barry Trotter, politically incorrect avatar of Harry Potter [ 2002-12-13

LONDON (Reuters) - the American humorist Michael Gerber signed a parody of the
adventures of Harry Potter entitled "Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody"
which has a great success in this Holidays Season. As Harry Potter studies at
the school of the wizards of Hogwarts, in the same manner Barry Trotter attends
the establishment of Hogwash where, after an agreement with the direction, he
idly starts his 11th year "of studies". Barry smokes pipe and cigarettes, tries
to read "the existentialism for dummies" and more often fights by pleasure than
to defend his/her comrades. The parody seems to have found its public but "we
receive sometimes aggressive e-mail some eight year old children", declared in
Reuters the thirty year author. "the other complaints emanate from people who
bought the book by error and which hurries to bring it back", declared Gerber
about the book that he started by publishing by himself, the publishers
initially fearing the legal proceedings. "I printed it on request. My printer
made a specimen of it and sent it". The "by word of mouth" made the remainder
and the work is about to become a best-seller for Christmas in Great
Britain. "We are in the presence of a phenomenon of passion similar to that of
Harry Potter", confirms a spokesman of Waterstone, larger British distributor
of books. "50.000 samples have been sold in the United States. There is a
Japanese edition, an Estonian and a Chinese ", explains the humorist who has
finally found an editor and whose Web site (www.barrytrotter.com) received more
than 100.000 visits.
The four volumes of the original by J.K. Rowling were sold by 175 million
specimens in 59 languages.
