Maybe it is swathe? He was commenting that a wide regions (a "swathe") of
China was becoming a rust-belt (like Cleveland, Detroit, Gary, Indiana in
the U.S., pick your own past-it industrial region in England). swath/swathe
are variants of each other. To my amazement the American Heritage Dictionary
lists the BBS pronunciation first, although it lists them both....
that is to say, they have it rhyming with "bathe" (as did the BBS correspon-
dent) rather than "moth" (the way God intended). 

   John, sounds like the "men in tights" have struck again! If you can't
buckle swash, then buckle swath (I never knew what "swash" was, either!).
