As with many things, my wife and I watched MASH in reruns (we figure that
if it endures, it'll be readily available in reruns... if it is not readily
available in reruns, it probably wasn't worth watching in the first place).
At any rate, I suppose we are pretty well inured (sic?) to laugh track, since
you cannot get away from the damned things. I cannot figure out if they are
more insulting to the audience or the producers of the program if they
assume that you won't know when (if) to laugh. I remember seeing "Man from
UNCLE" for the first time after I got out of the army in 1965. I had been
in Germany, so what little TV I had been able to see for about three years
was in German. UNCLE was hilarious (very broad satire, I thought). The group
of people with whom I was watching it seemed to assume it was serious secret
agent stuff, in the vein of James Bond, etc. We each thought the other was
pretty weird, I guess.
John - Love the parking ticket joke.
Chris - So we will accept each that the other talks funny... but given that
we got so much else from England, why do we drive on opposite sides of the
road?
