Needing to call local post office, I looked up the number in the current
phone book.

There were several branches to choose from, but all eventually yielded the
same result.

You dial the number and reach a recording.  The recording says the local
number has been changed to a 1-800 number and points out this is a free
call.

You dial the 1-800 number and reach a recording.  This recording says you
need to dial a 1-900 number to get  national directory assistance to find
the number for the local post office branch you seek.  The recording also
points out that there is a $1.99 charge for this service and you must be
over 18 to use the service.
