He said he wiped the HD and still couldn't get Windows to run on it (I
think that's what he meant anyway)

My daughter runs both Windows and Linux on her computer.

She reformatted the hard disk, setting up a partition for Windows and a
partition for Linux.  One day, she had a crash, so she had to start over
anyway, so she took the opportunity.
