One aspect bugs the hell out of me, particularly in Australia, where in
Queensland in recent years, they clear thousands of acres of forest per day - yes
that's right - is the cry "this is development, it must be good, think of the
farmers, yadda, yadda".
Closer inspection here reveals "the farmer" isn't some mum and pop show, but a
giant multinational corporation who have previously demonstrated when they have
exhausted the soil etc., raised the salt table (Australia's No. 1 rural problem),
lower the water table, they simply abandon it and move on. Small farmers own and
clear thousands of square miles?
More trees are destroyed in Queensland in one day than the whole country
combined, re-plant in a week. Yes, Mum & Pop farmers are re-planting trees
because it makes good economic sense.
Every time any sort of large development denudes recreational facilities,
visually impairs the environment or simply destroys the environment in an
unsustainable way, it's always underneath some multinational corporation who
can't give a stuff.
Sheez...
