No, at the time they were called Grand Prix, then Coca Cola and Marlboro
sponsored an annual 100 lap final event.

The were modified sedans (just looked like the original Fords, Chevs, Holdens
etc.) where all body panels were fibreglass, of course everything was reinforced
and natch the engines, gear boxes, diffs etc were revhead heaven and typically
priced at $250,000+ not counting other costs. Not a poor mans sport.

Sprint cars were the support acts. Events were stages over preceding weeks /
months building up to the once a year galah 100 lapper. Took hours to complete,
it was on a small tight asphalt track and they went from absolute  nothing to
100+ mph in 5 seconds and they stopped just as fast.

Huge family entertainment.

BTW - Yanks won 7 years out of 11 but they had massive budgets.
