I just saw the news that WJXT-TV (Channel 4) in Jacksonville FL will
soon cease, after 50 years, to be a CBS affiliate and will become
independent. This news item took me back to my boyhood in central
Florida. When my family got its first TV set in 1954, WJXT was the
only station we could get. My dad had to put a big Channel 4 yagi up
at about 10 meters aimed at Jacksonville, which was over 150 miles
away to the northeast. Even then, the black and white picture still
had a little snow. The only other station in range of our town was
Channel 38 in Saint Petersburg, but our TV set lacked UHF capability.
If you wanted Channel 38, you had to buy a UHF converter and put up a
separate UHF antenna aimed southwest toward St. Petersburg. This, I
guess, was too much for my dad, so we had to settle for the single
station. At least we never had any arguments about what we should
watch!
