The K3 worked fine on 6 meters during the contest. No external preamp here. I compare it from time to time with my Flex 5000A - Winner - K3, but not by much. I don't think an external preamp is a bad idea for any rig. I think the PRO III that I use to have would have benefited from an external preamp a bit too. A bandscope is great for 6 meters. You can see a station and QSY immediately. I've never used it much on other bands. Might try it on 10 meters and, in the Fall, on 160.
