The Anne Arundel Radio Club needs help. Some of those receiving this email are current AARC members. Some are ex-members. Some are just people who participated in at least one AARC Public Service Event in our last good year, 2019, when I was club President. And a few are just hams who have recently upgraded, and to those I say, "Congratulations".
This Sunday, September 19th we are scheduled to provide communication for an event called "The Run For The Lighthouse", and we are still a few communicators short of the number required to properly handle this event. Though this event is outdoors, some who usually volunteer are staying home due to COVID-19. This event is a fund raiser sponsored yearly by an Annapolis area charity called "The Friends of the Lighthouse". It is a combination half-marathon and 5K with an associated walk, which runs from 8am till 11am, at Quiet Waters Park in Edgewater MD. Its a beautiful park, and as usual volunteers may bring portable chairs and get a bit of a tan while watching the runners go by. We should be on site about an hour before the race around 7am. (I hope that hour doesn't scare anyone.)
So it's 3 easy hours, no heavy lifting, no running, you just hold an HT in your hand, make a few communications as needed, and go home knowing you've done your part for charity. If you are one of the few who have never done one of these, trust me, you can do this. We can help you through it and even help program your HT for the frequencies needed. Oh and if you don't have an HT, we can arrange to lend you one for the duration of the event.
So if your body is above room temperature, and you have a ham license technician or above, and some free time this Sunday morning, please consider volunteering with us. And I mean us, as I'll be there right along with you. The sad part is that without enough people coming forward, we will have to cancel our participation. I joined the AARC in the early 1980's and have never seen that happen. This event is 4 days away. So if you can make it, please email me your name, call sign and email address ASAP.
Finally the reason I am contacting you, instead of our President or other official is that our President is in the hospital trying to recover from an infection after hip replacement, our VP just took the job after our elected VP resigned, and our Secretary is recovering from pneumonia which resulted from COVID-19. Plus the person who was originally our Public Service Director has had to resign that job due to family issues. So I am volunteering just to ask you to volunteer. But don't feel sorry for me. Just help me out. Please.
I thank you for even considering this invitation to volunteer. I am crossing my fingers.
