James Montgomery,
Hurricane Florence is rapidly approaching the US and there is a good possibility that Maryland may be impacted. In preparation for this storm, all Maryland Responders should take appropriate precautions and prepare accordingly.
• Prepare an emergency kit including food, water, a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, medication, copies of your critical information and other critical supplies.
• Make sure your pets are prepared. Include food and water for pets in your emergency kit.
• Keep your vehicles fueled and devices charged.
• Have some cash on hand in case you need to pay for something if the power is out.
• Sign up for text or email alerts for emergency notifications. The Maryland Prepares mobile app, created by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, gives real-time emergency alerts. Download now: http://mema.maryland.gov/Pages/mdprepares.aspx.
• Create a family communications plan. Get together with your family to agree on the ways to contact one another in an emergency and to identify meeting locations.
• Familiarize yourself with hurricane evacuation routes in your area and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you need to evacuate. To learn about Maryland evacuation zones, visit: https://mema.maryland.gov/Pages/know-your-zone-md.aspx.
• For additional information on how to prepare, visit:
o https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes
o http://mema.maryland.gov/Pages/resources-hurricane.aspx
o https://preparedness.health.maryland.gov/Pages/factsheets.aspx
There have been no state level requests at this time to activate Maryland Responders; however, requests may potentially come to assist with response or recovery efforts should significant impacts occur. In particular, medical and mental health provider support may be requested for public emergency shelter operations. Keep in mind that activation requests may come from the State Program or local county units.
Responders should take this opportunity to log in to your Responder profile to review and update your contact information and check your Road to Readiness status at: https://mdresponds.health.maryland.gov/. For more information on how to complete your Road to Readiness and/or check on your progress, please visit: https://mdr.health.maryland.gov/Pages/RoadtoReadiness.aspx.
Thank you,
Maryland Responds Medical Reserve Corps
