Marty, great stuff getting into the Mt Mitchell machine. A few things about
that machine, one Mt Mitchell and Clingman's Dome are two peaks about 70
miles apart, with Mt Mitchell being slightly higher than Clingman's. (Mt
Mitchell is the Highest point East of the Mississippi) That repeater used
to cover even more than it does now. If I remember correctly, it covered
over to Greensboro, NC or better, down into SC, and GA, west into TN, and up
into KY and VA. It even better then than it is now. They may have lost a
member of the club, but I think they also lost their antenna site, which was
on a tower right at the peak. At that time they thought the repeater was
going away, and I probably did for a little while until they found a new
repeater site. It was great when I was going to visit my folks in Cherokee,
NC because I could let then know where I was, even though I was still four
hours away.

Subject: [SMCARA] Height is might!
While traveling back from ATL overnite Saturday night, I dialed up the
repeater on Mt. Mitchell in Pisgah Nat'l Forest. (a.k.a. Clingman's Dome)
In the neighborhood of 6,642 ft. ASL.
Using a 12-watt HT from inside the car, I joined the 9PM Sat night net the
local club there conducts.
They had no problem copying my call, handle, location, and comments.
Talking about overlook...the net meeting included hams from VA, TN, NC, SC
and I believe, KY. I was able to monitor the repeater for around 30-40
miles. When it failed to open the squelch steadily, I terminated it.
'Don't believe it was ducting or the such, these guys on the net from all
these states know each other by name and obviously talk each week.
Oddly, in some of the repeater databases there is question as to the
existence of the Mt. Mitchell repeater, or even that it is still active,
due I think to the fact that the person who originally maintained it is now
deceased (don't quote me on that) But someone else is keeping it running
and it does well. Output is 145.190
