Tony,

Thanks for the introduction and, once again, welcome to the Pax River area and to the SMCARA! We all look forward to meeting you in person.

We have a couple of events coming up in the next week or so that you might be interested in. This coming Saturday, on 2 December from 10 AM to 5 PM, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum will be having a FREE family day (no admission charge) to the entire museum complex as we will be welcoming the newly arrived EA-6B Prowler aircraft to our flight line with our "Meet the Prowler" event. We'll have kids tables, VX-23 Aircrew at the airplane, a food truck, and a speaker panel from 1:30p to 2:30 that will be led by RADM Mark Darrah (PEO-U&W).

We have 4 tables for kids
                        1. Drawing (Hank Caruso drawings of Prowler and Carrier)
                        2. Ham Radio Demonstration – manned by SMCARA members
                        3. Paper Airplane flying/landing on the carrier outline
                        4. RF Remote Car demo/RF blockage/Interference

We will also be showcasing the newly renovated Flight Technology Hall along with the newly renovated flight simulators and the new Collections Management Facility in the two buildings behind the main Test & Evaluation Hall. In addition to some great EA-6B guest panel speakers right after lunch, we intend to have a ham radio display table in the main building to introduce children of all ages to the hobby and perhaps do some simple demonstrations of modulation and spectrum signals using signal generators and spectrum analyzers. Please feel free to join us at the museum and help out at the table and talking to our visitors about this great hobby! Plus there will be food available on-site in case you get hungry.

Then, on Saturday, December 9th at 6 PM, the club will be having an informal Christmas Party in the event room at the Golden Corral restaurant just up the street. From SMCARA President June Entzi :

  When: December 9th
  Where: Golden Corral
           22606 THREE NOTCH ROAD
           LEXINGTON PARK, MD
Time: 1800 (6 pm )

We have reserved a separate room for all of us to sit and socialize and enjoy some time together. The prices for the buffet are 13.99 for adults, 12.99 for seniors, with 2.89 for drinks. I reserved it for 25 people, but we will need to give them a more accurate number so they know how many servers to have in the room, and how much of the actual room we will be using. So I need RSVP’s from everyone who will be attending (June Entzi <jdentzi at hotmail.com).

So there you go Tony, hope you (any anyone else on the SMCARA mailing list) can make one of both of these upcoming ham radio events here in Lexington Park before the first 2018 meeting of the club in January.

  Kind regards,

  Pete (WA3UMY)

PS: full disclosure... I am also the Board Vice-President of the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and Exhibit Lead so would really like to get a good participation from all the local amateur radio operators.

Subject: [SMCARA] Greetings from N5TB

Hello all I am N5TB, Tony, and have been off the air since 1998 until recently. I work and reside in the local area and am looking forward to getting involved in the club here. I started hamming in Jax, Fl and was licensed in 1993 as KD4YAR until my upgrade. I was elemered by the late W5HUQ and NU4Y who were instrumental in my favorite modes of operation today, CW and RTTY. NU4Y is a leading cw op for VP5M of the North Florida Dx Association for dxpeditions to the Turks and Caicos.
I have operated as /KP4 AND /IT9 while deployed overseas and had a blast doing it before i left the hobby for awhile. I love to contest and just knocked the rust off during CQWW CW this weekend. My favorite though is Field Day and I hope to reserve a CW seat during the upcoming FD next summer on a night shift. Ive notice many things have changed in ham radio since `98, and i hope to "catch up" in the months to come. Biggest hurdle has been relearning rig / pc interface since serial ports went away during my hiatus. But im getting there.
I usually hang on the local repeater and ive chatted with a few members thus far and will meet the rest of you when meetings resume in January. My modest CW station is up and running. It doesnt take much more than a piece of wire and good hearing to complete a qso. And i am having fun doing it again.
I look forward to meeting you all and helping out on the cw station if you will have me. See you soon! Happy holidays!
Tony, N5TB
